The Outer Limits on Science Fiction Reality

A blog that is a little science, a little fiction, and a lot of real.

There Is Nothing Wrong With Your Television Set

“There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to – The Outer Limits,” said Control Voice Vic Perrin.

But There Is Something Wrong With My Blog

Yes, today is Wednesday Writer Spider Street Fighter, if anyone out there is keeping track, and I did have a great quote on writing by Thoreau, and a great image to go with it, but THEY are working on my blog.

I wanted an archive of my posts, and in doing so my copy and image sizes shrunk. The entire time I’m crying over my shrunken images and copy, I am thinking of the above dialogue from of the 1963 TV series, The Outer Limits. Do you remember it? The introduction to each episode has to stand out in the history of television as one of the all time greats. Do you agree?

A Couple of Interesting Facts

  • Leslie Stevens and Joseph Stefano were creators of The Outer Limits (TOL).
  • Stefano was also the screenwriter for Alfred Hitchcock’s Pyscho
  • Some of the monsters in TOL were later used in Star Trek episodes.
  • Lead actors in TOL, such as Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner, later appeared in Star Trek.
  • TOL is considered, by some, to place more emphasis on science fiction than the Twilight Zone.
  • TOL gained such a cult following its first season, that loyal fans would actually take their TVs with them if they were going to be away from home, so as not to miss an episode—before DVRs.
  • “The best program of its type ever to run on network TV,” said popular horror writer Stephen King.
  • It only lasted two seasons. Stefano left the show after the first season because producers moved TOL to Saturday nights against The Jackie Gleason Show

Hopefully, my images and copy can be un-shrunk, and I get to keep my archive.

Until Then

“We now return control of your television set to you. Until next week at the same time, when the control voice will take you to – The Outer Limits.”

Hi SciFi Luhva— so great to hear from you. I was surprised to learn TOL only lasted two seasons. Why is good sci-fi always the first to go? I really do believe TOL was ahead of its time. Thank you for contributing.
