Animal Spirit Guides: Rabbit

Baby cottontail rabbits—a gift from our cats.

Our three cats are notorious for bringing us baby animals. On our return from our last RVing trip, our cats thought it a good thing to deliver to our doorstep four baby rabbits—one at a time—all in delicate condition. In light of that, let’s take a look at what the Rabbit signifies as a spirit guide.

He has an amazing legend according to Jamie Sams and David Carson, authors of MEDICINE CARDS: THE DISCOVERY OF POWER THROUGH THE WAYS OF ANIMALS.

THE LEGEND

Rabbit was once a brave and fearless warrior. He was befriended by a witch, Eye Walker. One day they were walking along and sat to rest.

“I’m thirsty,” Rabbit said.

Eye Walker picked up a leaf, blew on it, and then handed Rabbit a gourd of water.

Rabbit didn’t say anything.

After a bit, Rabbit said, “I’m hungry.”

Eye Walker picked up a stone, blew on it, and changed it to a turnip.

Rabbit ate it but didn’t say anything.

Medicine CardsThey continued along the trail into the mountain. Near the top, Rabbit tripped, fell, and rolled to the bottom. Eye Walker found him in very sad condition. She used her magic salve on Rabbit to heal his great pain and mend his broken bones.

Rabbit didn’t say anything.

Days later, Eye Walker went searching for her friend, but Rabbit was nowhere to be found.

Eye Walker gave up looking for him. Days later, by chance, she met up with Rabbit. “Rabbit, why are you hiding and avoiding me?” she asked.

“Because I am afraid of you. I am afraid of magic,” Rabbit said, cowering. “Leave me alone!”

“I have used my magical powers on your behalf and now you turn on me and refuse my friendship,” Eye Walker said.

Rabbit did not see the tears his words brought to Eye Walker’s eyes. Instead, he said, “ I hope I never see you again.”

“Rabbit,” Eye Walker said, “We were once great friends, but no more. It is within my power to destroy you, but because of the past and the medicines we have shared together, I will not do this. But from this day forward I lay a curse on you and your tribe. From now on, you will call your fears and your fears will come to you. Be on your way, for the sweet medicines that bound us together as friends are broken.”

Rabbit became known as the Fear Caller. He shouts, “Eagle, I’m afraid of you.”

Eagle hearing him comes and eats him. Rabbit calls out his fear to bobcats, wolves, coyotes, and even snakes until they come.

THE LESSON

What you fear most is what you will become. Stop talking about what ifs and horrible things happening. Release these fears and allow Mother Earth to swallow them up. Become the mighty warrior Rabbit once was.

Boy, did I ever need Rabbit’s lesson to remind me not to be fearful of: losing another child, selling everything and Rving full time, and publishing my YA novels.
Hope his message helps you too. Life is full of magic. No need for us to be fearful.

A life lived in fear is a life half lived.

The Probe’s Mission Statement

The Probe is a blog devoted to the exploration of the unexplainable, to finding the truth in occurrences that resemble science fiction, and to researching and reporting on topics that could be flung upon the wall of weird. New posts are featured as often as I can find WiFi, and as often as I have something I think you might find interesting.

I became interested in the power of animal medicine when I researched the Comanches and Native Americans for my first novel. Native people, who stay connected to the Earth, believe that the Creator sends messages to us through the animals. After much research and from my own personal experiences, I too have become a firm believer in observing and mediating on the messages our animal friends bring to us.

There was a child went forth every day,

And the first object he look’d upon, that object he became.

And that object became part of him for the day or a certain part of the day,

Or for many years or stretching cycle of years.
