Monster Mash Monday. Thank you Berg and del Toro.

Godzilla 2014
Godzilla 2014

We all love. Love. Love. A good monster. I don’t mean good in the sense of Dudley Do Right good. I mean good as in—freaky me out, pee in my pants, look under the bed, scream my head off—good. Like Alien, Predator, Body Snatchers, Terminator, Skitters, Jeepers Creepers, The Blob, The Thing, The Tingler, Frankenstein, Swamp Thing—have I left out anyone? Zombies—hummmm? Technically, are they monsters or just people off their meds or with a disease? Same for werewolves and vampires—and make no mistake I am a big, big fan of zombies, werewolves, and vampires.

No, I didn’t forget about the all time great, GODZILLA.

Godzilla, that old sly devil—or giant lizard, or dinosaur, or dragon—just keeps resurrecting and restoring science fiction to its glory. A new version is scheduled to hit the theaters on May 15, 2014.  I’ll be at the iMax watching. My addiction for monster movies developed at the age of five, when my parents went to see the 1954 Godzilla release at the Longhorn Drive-In in Austin, Texas. I was supposed to be asleep in the backseat. No way! I wasn’t about to miss out on this. Opened my tiny eyes to a whole new world, and I never turned back. Or went to sleep. You can keep Cinderella. Give me Godzilla any day of the week.

But I really wish Hollywood would continue to search for new monsters. Instead, of just making Zombies out of the old. Picture Godzilla as one of the walking dead, or one of the “I want to suck your blood” fiends. OMG Godzilla can’t suck, he’d just eat the whole enchilada  Or how about a werewolf Godzilla—a Werezilla—it’s really a dragon by day and a werewolf by night.

You’re thinking about it. I can tell.

  Give Me Some Monsters

I  applaud Peter Berg’s efforts in Battleship and Guillermo de Toro’s efforts in Pacific Rim for giving us monster lovers new monsters to love along with a classic science fiction fix. (It’s an addiction, you know.)

Battleship and Pacific Rim, box offices successes? Not exactly. I think people are still trying to get over sexy vampires and werewolves. But for those of us who enjoy the tantalizing appeal of new monsters, I thank you Berg and de Toro. I personally loved the movies.
