History of the Bernicia Arsenal

A beautiful cousin of mine lives in Benicia, one of the oldest cities in California. She suggested I check into the paranormal activity connected to this picturesque town nestled along the Carquinez Strait. Besides its rich history dating back to its founding in 1847, Benicia is also steeped in eerie Urban Legends. Among the most chilling, I found the Benicia Arsenal Urban Legend.
Established in 1849, this historic military installation played a pivotal role in supplying supplies to the West Coast during conflicts.
It was decommissioned in 1964 and became part of the Benicia Industrial Park. Despite its modern usage, the Arsenal’s past continues to echo through Urban Legends of paranormal activity.
Phantom of the Arsenal

The Phantom of the Arsenal is said to be the spirit of a young soldier who met a mysterious and untimely death on the grounds. Those who claim to have encountered the ghost describe a shadowy figure in an old military uniform, often seen patrolling the deserted corridors and empty buildings.
Reports of unexplained footsteps, especially in the dead of night, and sudden drops in temperature add to the haunting atmosphere. Witnesses have recounted seeing severed arms, legs, and heads floating in dark rooms. They also report hearing disembodied voices.
These ghostly occurrences have turned the Benicia Arsenal into a focal point for paranormal enthusiasts and have embedded a spine-chilling element into the town’s local folklore.
Benicia Arsenal/Flash Fiction
Dark clouds obscured the moon over the Benicia Arsenal. Its pale light threw long shadows across the historic grounds. Journalist Maria Vasquez had heard the stories of the Phantom of the Arsenal, but she had always dismissed them as mere folklore. One night, she was determined to debunk the legend for good.
She walked the deserted corridors, her footsteps echoing in the silence. The air was thick with the scent of old wood and rusting iron. Maria’s flashlight beam danced over peeling paint and forgotten relics of a bygone era. She reached the heart of the Arsenal, where the alleged sightings were most frequent, and paused to listen.
A sudden chill swept through the room, raising goosebumps on her arms. She tightened her grip on the flashlight and took a deep breath. Just the wind, she told herself. She moved deeper into the Arsenal, her senses heightened. Then she heard it. The unmistakable sound of footsteps behind her. She spun around, but the corridor was empty. Her heart raced as she called out, “Who’s there?”
Silence…
She turned back, and there he was—a shadowy figure in an old military uniform, standing at the end of the hall. Darkness obscured his face, but his presence was unmistakable. Maria felt an icy wave of fear wash over her, yet she stood her ground.
“What do you want?” she demanded, her voice steady despite the terror gripping her.
The figure raised an arm and pointed to a door at the far end of the hall. Then, as suddenly as he had appeared, he vanished. Maria’s instincts told her to flee, but her curiosity was stronger. She approached the door, heart pounding, and pushed it open.

Inside, she found a long-abandoned room with a single wooden chest. She knelt and opened it. A collection of old letters and a photograph of a young soldier lie hidden at the bottom. The letters detailed a story of love and betrayal, of promises broken and lives lost.
Among them was the soldier’s last letter, never sent, professing his undying love for a beautiful young woman named Maria.
Possessed
Journalist Maria regarded her name and the name of the soldier’s lost love a mere coincidence. To her, The Phantom of the Arsenal was a restless soul who needed closure.
She took the letters home with her and vowed to share the young soldier’s forgotten story. As she left the Arsenal, the oppressive weight of the past lifted.
She thought.
Until Death

Decades later, at the age of ninety-five, Maria still sat at her desk. Every day. For hours on end. And wrote letters to the dead soldier, proclaiming her love for him. She thought herself the beautiful woman who the soldier loved.
Never at rest. Never finished. Forever in love. The soldier and Maria walk the corridors of the Benicia Arsenal.
